Edge Intelligence in Civil Aviation: Paradigms, Techniques, and Applications

Wenbin Li, Zhongtian Liao, Bolin Liu, Yongjie Zhou, Jingling Wu, Xiaoyong Lin, Jing Chen

Civil aviation is safety critical and its operations, from flight decks and towers to ramps and maintenance, generate massive, heterogeneous data at the network edge. Yet cloud centric deployment of large Artificial Intelligence (AI) models often produces high task latency, lacks offline capability in communication denied environments, and requires centralizing sensitive data, raising privacy and sovereignty risks. Edge AI moves perception, prediction, and decision logic closer to the data producers via compression, collaborative inference, and split learning, thereby reducing latency, bandwidth, and exposure while enabling graceful operation during disconnections. This paper provides a panoramic view and a common understanding of edge intelligence tailored to civil aviation. We firstly articulate the operational motivations for edge AI, and then review recent techniques for edge inference and edge learning. We then introduce the organizational computing paradigms and the respective configurations in civil aviation environments; finally, we describe the emerging applications and the future research trends of edge intelligence in civil aviation. We argue that a refined edge solution can complement cloud foundations to deliver low latency, privacy preserving, and resilient AI services across the civil aviation lifecycle.

Chinmaya Kumar Dehury, Boris Sedlak, Alaa Saleh, Ilir Murturi, Lauri Loven, Satish Narayana Srirama, et al.

We are moving from an information age to the age of intelligence. A decade, or possibly less than that, data will not be the gold anymore rather the derived intelligence out of the data and the information we posses from the edge of the network. Existing Edge Intelligence researc…

Beyond Independent Optimization: Compression, MoE Routing, and Quantization Interactions in Multimodal Edge Intelligence

Jay Gor, Karm Dave, Akshita Abrol, Rajesh Gupta, Sudeep Tanwar, Zhengkui Wang

Efficient multimodal inference is increasingly constrained not only by model quality or FLOP count, but also by the cost of preserving, moving, routing, caching, and quantizing multimodal representations under latency, memory, and energy constraints. This paper reviews recent adv…

CBD: API-Only LLM Black-Box Unlearning through Controlled Behavioral Divergence

Zhiqiang Xie, Yijing Lin, Zhipeng Gao, Dong In Kim

Edge devices increasingly invoke large language models (LLMs) through API services for context aware edge intelligence, while edge generated data may be collected to improve LLMs and may introduce sensitive, copyrighted, harmful, or outdated information into model behavior. Machi…

EdgeFaaS: A Function-based Framework for Edge Computing

Neha Vadnere, Yu-Ting Wang, Yitao Chen, Sreehari Sadesh, Ming Zhao

Edge computing brings unique challenges as the resources on the edge are highly diverse in capabilities and capacities, and highly distributed across many users and the physical world. Existing distributed computing frameworks cannot adequately handle this level of heterogeneity…
