3D-Aware VLMs with Implicit and Explicit Geometries

Wenhao Li, Xueying Jiang, Quanhao Qian, Deli Zhao, Ran Xu, Shijian Lu, Gongjie Zhang

Despite rapid progress, most existing vision-language models (VLMs) built from 2D visual inputs often struggle when handling various 3D tasks that require fine-grained spatial understanding and reasoning. To bridge this gap, we present VLM-IE3D, a unified framework that enhances the 3D spatial awareness of VLMs by equipping them with both implicit and explicit 3D geometries learned from RGB videos. Our VLM-IE3D introduces Implicit Geometry Tokens (IGTs) that capture high-level geometric priors from input videos, as well as complementary Explicit Geometry Tokens (EGTs) that encode detailed geometric structures from reconstructed 3D attributes. On top of that, VLM-IE3D comes with a 3D-aware adapter that effectively fuses the two types of geometric representations with 2D visual cues. This RGB-only design injects strong 3D inductive biases for fine-grained spatial understanding and reasoning without requiring any additional 3D inputs. Extensive experiments show that VLM-IE3D achieves superior performance consistently across various 3D tasks including 3D video detection, 3D visual grounding, 3D dense captioning, and spatial reasoning. Code and models are available at https://github.com/Vegetebird/VLM-IE3D.

Depth Estimators Are Implicit Neural Fields for 3D Scene Geometry Inpainting and Reconstruction

Yingzhao Jian, Zihao Lin, Hehe Fan

The 3D geometry of real-world scene data is often incomplete. Mainstream methods use depth estimators to inpaint missing structure. However, their prediction results can be inconsistent with observed geometry, or unreliable on out-of-distribution data. To solve these problems, we…

Seeing Once is Enough? Online Geometry-Aware Token Pruning for 3D Question Answering

Ruei-Chi Lai, Bolivar Solarte, Chin-Hsuan Wu, Yi-Hsuan Tsai, Min Sun

Recent Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance on 2D question answering tasks. However, extending these models to the 3D question answering remains challenging, as they typically require multiple views of the scene, which incurs substant…

ELSA3D: Elastic Semantic Anchoring for Unified 3D Understanding and Generation

Tianjiao Yu, Xinzhuo Li, Yifan Shen, Onkar Susladkar, Yuanzhe Liu, Xiaona Zhou, et al.

Unified 3D foundation models aspire to generate 3D assets and reason about them in language within a single backbone, but their text-3D interaction remains largely implicit. Existing methods concatenate text and 3D tokens into a flat sequence and rely on self-attention, collapsin…

Shape Over Intensity: Directional Topological Encoding for False Positive Reduction in Intracranial Aneurysm Detection

Akshay Gokhale, Mansi Dhamne

Automated detection of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) from CT angiography (CTA) is severely hindered by high false-positive rates. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) rely on local pixel intensities, causing systematic confusion between saccular aneurysms and vascular bifurcations…
