Improving Certified Robustness via Adversarial Distillation

Matteo Melis, Jesus Martinez Del Rincon, Vishal Sharma

Certified training aims to produce models whose predictions can be formally verified against adversarial perturbations, typically by optimising upper bounds on the worst-case loss over an allowed perturbation set. For neural networks, certified training methods based purely on tight relaxation bounds produce networks that are amenable to certification, but sacrifice standard accuracy. Conversely, adversarial training often yields stronger empirical robustness and standard accuracy, but the resulting models are generally difficult to certify with neural network verifiers. Recently, the literature has shown that better standard-certified accuracy trade-offs can be achieved by combining adversarial training objectives with loose over-approximations based on Interval Bound Propagation (IBP), effectively interpolating between lower and upper bounds of the worst-case loss. Building on this, we introduce AD-CERT, a certified training objective that combines adversarial distillation with an IBP upper bound. We show that distilling adversarial information over the logit space from an empirically robust teacher provides an effective lower bound surrogate for certified training, with AD-CERT achieving state-of-the-art certified performance on several robustness benchmarks. Furthermore, in a unified setup, distilling adversarial information at the logit-level is shown to improve certified accuracy over a robust feature-space distillation objective by up to 5.40 percentage points.

Improving Adversarial Robustness via Activation Amplification and Attenuation

Taïga Gonçalves, Yongsong Huang, Tomo Miyazaki, Shinichiro Omachi

The existence of adversarial attacks is often attributed to the presence of non-robust features in neural networks. While prior defenses reduce their impact via pruning, masking, or feature recalibration, we instead propose to jointly learn to amplify and attenuate these signals…

Boundary-Seeking GAN-Augmented TabTransformer for Adversarially Robust Intrusion Detection

Raihan Sultan Pasha Basuki, Aliyah Kurniasih

Machine learning-based intrusion detection systems (IDSs) often suffer from class imbalance and vulnerability to adversarial attacks, leading to degraded detection performance and reduced robustness. This study proposes a TabTransformer framework augmented by the Boundary-Seeking…

Adversarial Robustness of Phishing Email Detection: A Comparative Study of TF-IDF + Logistic Regression and Fine-Tuned DistilBERT

Tanveer Ahmed, Seyedali Pourmoafil

Phishing emails remain one of the most persistent cybersecurity threats, and machine-learning classifiers are widely used to detect them. Most reported detection accuracies, however, are measured on clean, in-distribution test data rather than on emails deliberately altered to ev…

Digital Twins rely on surrogate models to mirror physical systems in real time, yet these models can degrade as operating conditions evolve, a phenomenon known as concept drift. Maintaining surrogate fidelity under drift, particularly when models must also capture aleatoric uncer…

Adversarial attacks on cybersecurity classifiers pose a dual threat: degrading predictions and destabilising the SHAP-based explanations that security analysts rely on to understand and triage alerts. We extend our prior MLP conference study to Random Forest and XGBoost across fo…
