Controlling Tool Use with Heading-Specific Activation Steering

Yuqi Chen, Vincent Siu, Yang Liu, Dawn Song, Chenguang Wang

Tool-augmented large language models extend their capabilities beyond parametric knowledge through external tools, but tend to invoke them unnecessarily. We investigate whether tool-use decisions have any stable internal representation that can be extracted and manipulated, a question that is non-trivial given that tools exist entirely in context at inference time and have no direct encoding in model weights. We show that steering vectors extracted from heading-anchors positions exert bidirectional causal control over tool-invocation behavior across five open-source models and three domains, suppressing unnecessary tool use most effectively in domains where parametric reasoning suffices. However, geometric analysis reveals that this causal effectiveness does not correspond to clean linear structure: tool-invocation steps exhibit diffuse, bimodal alignment with the suppression vector rather than the consistent negative alignment a linear encoding account would predict, and different tool types recruit largely distinct internal signatures with low cross-tool feature overlap. We hypothesize these geometric properties are indicative of the non-parametric nature of tools, and distinguish tool-use steering vectors from those extracted for parametrically grounded concepts. The relationship between this geometric irregularity and the observed causal effectiveness remains an open question.

Heuristic Learning for Active Flow Control Using Coding Agents

Paul Garnier, Jonathan Viquerat, Elie Hachem

Active flow control involves nonlinear dynamics, partial observations, and computationally expensive simulations, making controller design particularly challenging. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has emerged as a powerful framework for such problems, but its success typically…

ToolFailBench: Diagnosing Tool-Use Failures in LLM Agents

Harsh Soni

Tool calling is central to modern language model agents, but aggregate benchmark scores often hide where tool use fails. A model that never calls a needed tool and a model that calls the tool but ignores the result can look similar under final task accuracy. We introduce ToolFail…

Can We Break LLMs Out of Self-Loops? Fine-Grained Reasoning Control with Activation Steering

Sheldon Yu, Tong Yu, Xunyi Jiang, Rohan Surana, Gagan Mundada, Sungchul Kim, et al.

Extended reasoning has become standard for frontier Large Language Models (LLMs), yet the trajectories these models produce remain largely uncontrollable. Existing methods for shaping how a model reasons are prompt based approaches and operate at the input level, offering no fine…

The Geometry of Personality: Activation Steering with Jungian Cognitive Functions

Liu Zai, Yumeng Wang, Junchen Fu, Joemon M. Jose

Activation steering enables control and interpretation of LLMs, yet existing work primarily models personality through static trait frameworks such as the Big Five. We investigate whether personality can instead be represented and controlled as a set of cognitive processes using…

Conditional Optimal Bridge for Riemannian Activation Steering

Seyed Arshan Dalili, Ajay Narayanan Sridhar, Vijaykrishnan Narayanan, Mehrdad Mahdavi

Activation steering offers a lightweight alternative to fine-tuning for controlling large language models at inference time. While many existing methods implicitly optimize a log-density-ratio objective between desired and undesired activation distributions, they do so heuristica…
