Mitigating Matthew Effect: Multi-Hypergraph Boosted Multi-Interest Self-Supervised Learning for Conversational Recommendation

Yongsen Zheng, Ruilin Xu, Guohua Wang, Liang Lin, Kwok-Yan Lam

The Matthew effect is a big challenge in Recommender Systems (RSs), where popular items tend to receive increasing attention, while less popular ones are often overlooked, perpetuating existing disparities. Although many existing methods attempt to mitigate Matthew effect in the static or quasi-static recommendation scenarios, such issue will be more pronounced as users engage with the system over time. To this end, we propose a novel framework, Multi-Hypergraph Boosted Multi-Interest Self-Supervised Learning for Conversational Recommendation (HiCore), aiming to address Matthew effect in the Conversational Recommender System (CRS) involving the dynamic user-system feedback loop. It devotes to learn multi-level user interests by building a set of hypergraphs (i.e., item-, entity-, word-oriented multiple-channel hypergraphs) to alleviate the Matthew effec. Extensive experiments on four CRS-based datasets showcase that HiCore attains a new state-of-the-art performance, underscoring its superiority in mitigating the Matthew effect effectively. Our code is available at https://github.com/zysensmile/HiCore.

The Matthew effect is a notorious issue in Recommender Systems (RSs), \emph{i.e.}, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, wherein popular items are overexposed while less popular ones are regularly ignored. Most methods examine Matthew effect in static or nearly-static reco…

DysLexLens: A Low-Resource LLM Framework for Analysing Dyslexic Learners Insights from Online Forums

Dana Rezazadegan, Atie Kia, Phongpadid Nandavong, Dominique Carlon, Jeremy Nguyen, Abhik Banerjee, et al.

Dyslexic learners increasingly use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support reading, writing, organisation, and study-related tasks. However, their lived experiences with these tools remain largely underexamined. This paper proposes DysLexLens, a low-resource LLM framework,…

Where do LLMs Fall Short in CBT-Guided Affective Reasoning?

Vaishnavi Sinha, Pooja Guttal, Pranay Deep Reddy Katike, Vishal Sinha, Gerald Ndawula, Lira Yoon, et al.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) provides a structured framework for understanding a user's mental state by examining the interaction between cognitive and behavioral factors. However, out-of-the-box LLMs respond fluently and empathetically, yet collapse into validation & refle…

Memory-Conditioned Tool Calling for Camera-First Visual Agents

Xiaofan Wu, Xi Zeng, Miaoxia Chen, Peishan Chen, Shuyan Li, Jiyun Yao, et al.

Recognition tells an agent what is in an image; personal memory affects what is worth looking up next. In a camera-first setting the user can send only an image, so the agent must form the lookups. We study whether personal visual memory improves agent-side tool choice and tool a…

CMSL: Constructive Multi-Sequence Learning for Recommendation Systems

Zikun Cui, Renzhi Wu, Junjie Yang, Li Sheng, Jijie Wei, Linfeng Liu, et al.

Sequence learning has emerged as the promising paradigm in recommendation systems, surpassing traditional Deep Learning Recommendation Models (DLRM) by capturing the temporal nuances of user behavior. However, current state-of-the-art architectures operate under a limiting analog…

Vis2Reg: Visibility-Aware Landmark-Free Geometric 3D--2D Registration for Liver Laparoscopy

Jiaming Feng, Xukun Zhang, Shahid Farid, Sharib Ali

Accurate 3D--2D liver registration, which aligns preoperative 3D models to partial, view-dependent intraoperative surface observations, is critical for AR-guided laparoscopic surgery but remains challenging due to severe occlusion, limited visibility, and the lack of 3D ground-tr…
