Tokenizing Numerical and Embedding Features for LLM RecSys

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as backbone architectures for recommender systems because of their strong sequence modeling and representation learning capabilities. However, most LLM-based recommenders operate primarily on discrete textual tokens, whereas practical recommendation pipelines also rely on continuous numerical features and dense embedding features produced by upstream feature engineering or pretrained encoders. This mismatch limits the ability of LLM-based models to exploit fine-grained non-textual signals. We propose a soft-token fusion framework that maps numerical and embedding features into the LLM embedding space, allowing heterogeneous recommendation signals to be consumed through the standard token interface. We instantiate the framework in a shared-parameter LLM-based two-tower retrieval model and introduce an interaction-based fusion module that refines embedding and numerical soft tokens before they are inserted into the final LLM input. Experiments on three Amazon recommendation benchmarks show that soft-token fusion improves retrieval performance over LLM-based baselines, and that interaction-based fusion is more effective than direct concatenation of heterogeneous soft tokens.

Accurate determination of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) resectability relies on evaluating how the tumor interacts with major peripancreatic vessels on CT imaging, yet expert assessment often shows substantial variability. We introduce a fully automated multimodal deep…

Transformer-style architectures are increasingly adopted for industrial recommendation systems, yet they inherit a design premise misaligned with the task: generative models rely on per-token autoregressive prediction, which justifies maintaining large intermediate tensors that s…

Classifying daily activities needs posture, reconstructing them needs motion

Arefeh Farahmandi, Gunnar Blohm

Humans recognize movements effortlessly, even from noisy and complex visual input. But what information in the stimulus allows humans to rapidly classify movements? No framework has systematically compared different strategies of movement analysis to address this question. Here,…

An Information-Geometric Justification for Composite Coherence in Event-Based Narrative Extraction

Brian Keith-Norambuena

Graph-based narrative extraction relies on a coherence function to score transitions between events, but the coherence metrics in current use are defined operationally and lack an information-theoretic foundation. We study the composite metric $C=\sqrt{A\cdot T}$, where $A$ is th…

Field Order Should Not Matter: Permutation-Invariant Embedding Model Fine-Tuning for Structured Metadata Retrieval

Aivin V. Solatorio, Olivier Dupriez, Rafael Macalaba

We study retrieval over catalogs of structured metadata, where each record is a small schema whose fields answer different kinds of query. Embedding a record with a text encoder first serializes its fields into a string, which forces a choice of field order. We show this choice,…
