Dual-Satellite Doppler Accuracy Prediction and Geometry Selection for Sparse LEO Signals of Opportunity

Qi Liu, Marc Fernández-Temprado, Antoni Reus-Bergas, Shuguo Pan, Wang Gao, Gonzalo Seco-Granados, José A. López-Salcedo

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites have emerged as a promising complement to GNSS for positioning in signal challenged environments. In sparse LEO signals of opportunity scenarios, Doppler positioning often relies on only one or two satellite passes, making positioning accuracy highly dependent on pass geometry. This paper investigates dual satellite LEO Doppler accuracy prediction and geometry selection. A single pass Doppler accuracy model based on the Doppler Dilution of Precision (DDOP) framework is first validated using real Iridium measurements. An information domain fusion model is then developed to combine the effective position information from two satellite passes while accounting for pass specific clock parameters. Based on this model, an analytical relationship between the intersection angle of the two predicted error ellipses and the fused positioning accuracy is derived and verified through simulations. Long term ORBCOMM observations are further used to evaluate the practical availability of favorable satellite pairs. Results show that an intersection angle of about 20° is sufficient to achieve approximately 50 m theoretical positioning accuracy, and that such complementary satellite pairs are typically available within about 30 min. These results provide practical guidance for geometry aware satellite selection and observation scheduling in sparse LEO Doppler positioning.

Hybrid Time-Frequency Domain Frequency Offset Compensation Under GHz Doppler Shift for LEO Satellite-to-Ground Coherent Free-Space Optical Communication

Tiankuo Jiao, Hossein Kazemi, Harald Haas

Coherent free-space optical (FSO) communication is a promising solution for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite downlink transmission. However, high orbital velocity introduces multi-GHz Doppler shifts that appear as a rapidly time-varying carrier frequency offset (CFO), which is a m…

System-Level Evaluation of LEO Satellite Communications Under Service-Driven Traffic Dynamics

Miyeon Lee, Dong-Hyun Jung, Sucheol Kim, Hwanjin Kim, Junil Choi

As low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications take shape on a global scale, system-level evaluation has become essential for a rigorous understanding of their performance characteristics. Most existing studies have relied on a full-buffer assumption, which obscures the hetero…

Near-Optimal Lower Bounds on One-Bit Compressed Sensing of Approximately Sparse Signals

Junren Chen, Arya Mazumdar, Ming Yuan

This paper provides the first near-optimal lower bounds for one-bit compressed sensing of approximately sparse signals lying in a scaled $\ell_1$ ball, which is a commonly adopted relaxation of the exactly $k$-sparse assumption. In prior works, the best known upper bounds on unif…

Deadline-Bound Finite-Object Delivery over Intermittent LEO Satellite Contact Plans under Residual-Service Accounting

Houtianfu Wang, O. Tansel Baydas, Hanlin Cai, Haofan Dong, Ozgur B. Akan

Low-Earth-orbit (LEO) relay networks deliver finite objects -- sensing tiles, telemetry blocks, model updates, and checkpoints -- over intermittent inter-satellite and space-to-ground contact plans. Partial delivery is insufficient when the complete object misses its deadline. Wh…

Spatial and Temporal Correlation of Interference in a Narrow Multibeam LEO Satellite Random Access Network

Ilari Angervuori, Abid Afridi, Risto Wichman

Interference is a limiting factor in the emerging dense low Earth orbit (LEO) networks. In the LEO network, the interference is spatially and temporally correlated. At narrow-beam LEO base stations (BSs), spatial interference can vary significantly, and multipath fading introduce…
