ULTIMA RATIO (Milestone 1): Preliminary Architecture of a Remotely Operated Armored Tracked Vehicle for Wildfire Burnover Rescue

Abstract ULTIMA RATIO is a preliminary architectural study proposing a remotely operated armored tracked rescue vehicle intended for the extraction of firefighters or civilians trapped by rapidly advancing wildfire fronts (burnover scenarios). Rather than introducing novel materials or propulsion systems, the concept integrates established technologies into a unified platform combining thermal protection, armored mobility, positive-pressure life support, active water-based cooling and remote operation. The vehicle is designed as a last-resort extraction system operating when conventional evacuation procedures and personal fire shelters are no longer sufficient. This first milestone documents the engineering rationale, evaluates alternative material solutions that were considered and rejected, presents the selected system architecture and identifies the key engineering challenges that will guide future development, including transient thermal modelling, structural optimization and survivability assessment. This document represents an engineering concept study intended to stimulate discussion and future research on robotic rescue systems for extreme wildfire environments.
