(MPO)$^2$: Multivariate Polynomial Optimization based on Matrix Product Operators

Niccolò Ciolli, Anders Vestergaard Nørskov, Michael Kastoryano, Petr Taborsky, Morten Mørup

Central to machine learning and signal processing is the ability to perform universal function approximation and learn complex input-output relationships from limited numbers of observations. Multivariate polynomial models offer a natural way to express such relationships through multiplicative feature interactions, but their coefficient tensors grow exponentially in size with the polynomial degree. Existing tensorized polynomial models reduce this cost, yet canonical polyadic decompositions have rank-limited expressivity, and tensor train formulations are feature order dependent. We introduce Multivariate Polynomial Optimization based on Matrix Product Operators (MPO)$^2$, a framework that combines learned MPO feature embeddings with compact polynomial weight tensors. This yields feature order independent polynomial representations that can incorporate structured operators such as projections, convolutions, and masks for weight tensor symmetries. Across regression and classification benchmarks, (MPO)$^2$ improves over existing tensor decomposition based polynomial models and provides a flexible alternative for efficient polynomial function approximation.

Graph-Based Correlation Matrix Generation: A Convex Optimization Approach

Ali Fakhar, K{é}vin Polisano, Ir{è}ne Gannaz, Sophie Achard

This work addresses the generation of theoretical correlation matrices with prescribed sparsity patterns associated to graph structures. We propose a novel convex optimization framework in which an initial matrix is projected onto an elliptope under a positive semidefiniteness co…

DBA-Bench: A Production-Fidelity Benchmark for LLM-Based Database Operations Agents

LLM-based database agents show promise, but differing task scopes, testbeds, and metrics hinder comparison. We identify four gaps between evaluation and production operations: live-environment fidelity (multi-turn read-write interaction with a running database); observation-space…

Bayesian optimization (BO) is an optimization method that sequentially proposes the next candidate explainable variables for optimizing target variables by balancing exploration and exploitation. BO is often used under a limited evaluation budget, such as hyperparameter tuning of…

We study feature-level and node-level explanations for graph neural networks (GNNs) through the lens of Aumann-Shapley attribution. Path-integral methods such as Integrated Gradients provide an axiomatic formulation of attribution, but their practical use in deep GNNs typically r…

Graph signal processing tasks that leverage spectral information typically assume access to the complete graph topology, which is often unavailable in practice. We propose a systematic framework for subgraph filter learning (SFL), where subgraph-supported operators approximate am…
